Engagement photos are the first official pictures of you and your groom as a couple. The photo is often used to announce your engagement and it may be sent to friends and relatives along with an engagement announcement. You’ll want to carefully choose your wardrobe for the photos and make sure that both you and your fiancé are wearing clothes that are both appropriate and coordinated.

Is your engagement photo going to appear in the newspaper? If so, you’ll want to make sure that it looks good in black and white. Good black and white photos look best when you wear clothing that shows up good when next to each other. For example, if you’re wearing a black sweater make sure that the groom wears something light coloured so that there’s a contrast between the two of you.

When choosing clothing for the engagement photo you’ll want to wear something that is appropriate for the weather. Consider what the weather will be when the photo is released or sent out. For example, if you’re going to announce your engagement in the summer don’t wear a winter sweater for the photo.

Choose clothing with simple patterns. Stay away from busy prints because they often don’t show up well in photos. For women, a simple sweater or sweater set is ideal. Wear a simple necklace such as a set of pearls or a chain with a cross. Men can wear a polo shirt or button down shirt. Men should keep the shirt properly buttoned. If the groom prefers, he can wear a suit jacket.

The engagement photo can show a little bit of the personality of the couple. It can also convey a preview of the wedding to come. If the wedding will be a traditional formal affair, the engagement photo should be rather traditional as well. If the wedding is going to be held on the beach you can take a casual approach to the engagement photo.

Whatever you do, you should both feel comfortable in the clothes you choose. If you aren’t feeling good the photo will show it. Try on the outfits ahead of time and you can even take some practice photos to see what works best for you.
